This resource is aimed at social care workers, managers and social workers to enable you to understand more about loneliness, its impact and how you can help to recognise and respond to people at risk of loneliness. It can be used by other health professionals, community and voluntary organisations, carers and individuals.

Background and Credits

The resource has been funded by the Department of Health and has been endorsed by Sean Holland, Chief Social Work Officer at the Department of Health.

The content of the resource has been developed by the Northern Ireland Social Care Council in partnership with Age NI, Association for Real Change (ARC), BEE You Counselling, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, CLARE CIC, Clogher Valley Care Ltd, Harmony Community Care Services, Orchardville, Red Cross, Rodgers Community Care and independent contributors; Gretta Thompson and Fiona Murphy.

The resource was first published in April 2020 as Shielding, Social Isolation and Staying Connected – one of 4 specific COVID resources developed by the Social Care Council and partners which won the European Social Network Outstanding Team Award in November 2020.

Shielding, Social Isolation and Staying Connected was updated and republished as Loneliness and Staying Connected and launched on 26 April 2022 at a Social Care Council Lunchtime Seminar on Loneliness – The Role of Social Work.
